Quality Control & Testing Standards

Solamni's crocodile PVC leather QC protocol covers spunlace nonwoven backing quality, PVC coating penetration and uniformity, crocodile emboss fidelity, and durability under footwear and upholstery service conditions.

Production process control.

Spunlace backing is inspected for basis weight (±5 g/m²), thickness uniformity, and surface defects before coating. PVC paste (non-phthalate plasticizer) is knife-over-roll or reverse-roll coated with inline beta-gauge control (±5 g/m²), partially penetrating the backing for mechanical bond. Multi-zone gelation at 140–190°C (±3°C); crocodile emboss via engraved steel roll at 120–160°C, 30–60 kg/cm, depth verified by optical profilometer.

Physical and chemical testing (per batch, AQL 2.5).

Thickness (10-point micrometer), coating weight (gravimetric), 180° peel strength, tensile/elongation (ASTM D5035), Martindale abrasion, emboss depth (profilometer), rub/light fastness, jungle test (70°C/95% RH), cold flex (−15°C), backing linting, color consistency (ΔE ≤1.0), and VOC (headspace GC).

Regulatory testing.

PVC resin verified by K-value/FTIR; non-phthalate plasticizer by GC-MS; backing fiber composition (≥95% polyester) by FTIR/burning. Finished leather screened for REACH SVHC (GC-MS) and RoHS elements (ICP-OES). SGS/Intertek reports on request.

 Equipment backing production stability.

3 coating lines (≤1.6 m width), 4 gelation ovens, 3 embossing stations with multiple crocodile patterns, 2 surface-treatment lines, inline beta gauges, and full physical-testing lab. Coating-weight variation <5%; emboss depth consistency ±0.05 mm across 100 m rolls.

Industrial Application Scenarios

Fashion footwear uppers.

Crocodile PVC leather on spunlace nonwoven backing (0.8–1.2 mm) is used for fashion boot uppers, casual shoe quarters, sandal straps, and dress shoe accents. The crocodile emboss provides a premium exotic-leather appearance at a fraction of genuine crocodile cost, and the spunlace backing offers a soft, flexible hand feel that conforms to shoe lasts during assembly. Peeling strength above 30 N/3 cm ensures the coating does not separate during shoe lasting and wear.

Bags and handbags.

Medium-thickness crocodile PVC leather (1.0–1.4 mm) on heavier spunlace backing (80–120 g/m²) is used for handbags, tote bags, backpacks, clutches, and cosmetic bags. The embossed surface resists scuffing, and the spunlace backing provides good dimensional stability for bag structure. Custom colors and gloss levels support fashion-season product lines.

Belts, watch straps, and small goods.

Crocodile PVC leather (0.8–1.0 mm) is used for belts, watch straps, phone cases, tablet covers, wallets, and keychains. The consistent emboss pattern and color uniformity across rolls ensure matching appearance across product batches. The material can be die-cut, skived, and edge-painted using standard leather-goods equipment.

Upholstery and contract furniture.

Upholstery-grade crocodile PVC leather (1.2–1.4 mm, with optional CAL117 or BS5852 flame retardancy) is used for restaurant seating, hotel lobby furniture, bar stools, residential accent chairs, and headboards. The crocodile pattern adds a bold decorative element to commercial interiors, and PVC's stain resistance and easy-clean surface simplify maintenance in high-traffic environments.

Automotive interior trim.

Crocodile PVC leather is used for automotive interior trim accents, seat inserts, door panel overlays, and custom vehicle upholstery. Cold flex resistance to −15°C covers most climate zones, and the material can be vacuum-formed or heat-pressed over contoured interior panels.

Fashion accessories and packaging.

The material extends to hat bands, jewelry display pads, gift box wrapping, and premium product packaging, where a consistent crocodile texture and color provide a cohesive luxury aesthetic.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1 19

Q: How does spunlace nonwoven backing compare to knitted and needle-punched nonwoven backing for PVC leather?

A: A: Spunlace (hydroentangled) nonwoven backing offers the most uniform surface and softest hand feel, with low linting and good dimensional stability, making it ideal for fashion footwear, bags, and accessories where a smooth, flexible backing is required. Knitted backing offers higher stretch and conformability, preferred for shoe uppers that must stretch over lasts, but may show knit texture through thin coatings. Needle-punched nonwoven backing offers higher tensile strength and lower cost, used for heavy-duty upholstery and work boot uppers, but has a rougher surface and may lint. Spunlace backing is available in 40–120 g/m²: lighter weights (40–60 g/m²) for thin, flexible leather (0.8–1.0 mm); heavier weights (80–120 g/m²) for thicker, more structural leather (1.2–1.4 mm). We recommend spunlace for crocodile pattern fashion leather where surface uniformity and soft hand feel are prioritized.

Q: Can the crocodile emboss pattern be customized in scale size and depth, and what is the minimum order?

A: Standard crocodile patterns (small scale, medium scale, large scale, and hornback) are available from stock with 500 m MOQ. Custom crocodile emboss patterns require a new engraved steel roll (cost USD 2,000–4,500 depending on pattern complexity, roll width, and emboss depth) and a 20–25 day lead time. Emboss depth ranges from 0.2 mm to 0.6 mm: shallow emboss (0.2–0.3 mm) produces a subtle texture and is more durable under abrasion; deep emboss (0.4–0.6 mm) produces a more pronounced, realistic crocodile appearance but may show wear at scale edges earlier. Minimum production for a custom emboss is 1,000 meters per pattern. We provide emboss roll proofs (A4-size hand samples) before full production commitment, and the engraving roll is retained for future reorders.

Q: How does crocodile PVC leather compare to genuine crocodile leather in cost, durability, and regulatory compliance?

A:Crocodile PVC leather costs 85–95% less than genuine crocodile skin (USD 2–5/m² vs. USD 50–300+ per skin), with consistent color and pattern across full rolls versus the natural variation and scars of genuine hides. In durability, PVC crocodile leather offers comparable abrasion resistance (≥ 50,000 Martindale cycles) and superior water/stain resistance, but has lower breathability and a 3-year hydrolysis rating versus 10+ years for properly maintained genuine leather. Regulatory compliance is a key advantage: PVC leather is fully REACH and RoHS compliant and requires no CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) permits, whereas genuine crocodile products require CITES documentation and are restricted or banned in many jurisdictions (e.g., California, New York, EU for certain species). For fashion brands seeking an exotic-leather aesthetic without supply-chain risk, regulatory burden, or high cost, crocodile PVC leather on spunlace nonwoven backing is the standard specification.
